The Slovakian opera singer whose voice touched many over the years is to leave her role at the Bayerische Staatsoper in 2014, it has emerged. Gruberova has appeared less and less often in opera productions at the Staatsoper in recent times, and the 65-year old soprano has stated that she was under the impression that the Bayerische Staatsoper no longer had as much interest in working with her.

She was apparently recently offered a role in the tragic Donizetti opera Roberto Devereux in 2015, a role that she decided to turn down. In 2010 she played the part of Elisabetta in Roberto Devereux, garnering rave reviews – the Bayerische Staatsoper admitted that it was “an opera for a queen – a work made for Edita Gruberova!”. While the soprano feels that the Bayerische Staatsoper no longer appreciates her work as in previous years, she is sorry to say goodbye to the passionate audience that turns up to see her perform in Munich: “The audience here is wonderful – they know their stuff, they know exactly when to applaud”.

Gruberova will continue to perform for the Bayerische Staatsoper until 27th July 2014, before bowing out for the final time.

  1. Ola! Artsinmunich,
This question may be a little off-topic, They are probably two of my most favourite soprano arias, but so far I have yet to find my fave rendition.

I have heard numerous sopranos (or mezzos) singing those arias. Many people keep telling me that the “O Zittre Nicht” aria belongs to Dessay but I personally don’t really like her version. Other sopranos whom I’ve heard singing this aria including Sumi Jo, Edda Moser, Erika Miklosa, Diana Damrau, Joan Sutherland, Edita Gruberova, June Anderson etc.

And also for “O Mio Babbino Caro”, I’ve heard various versions from opera singers like Maria Callas, Sumi Jo, Carmen Monarcha, Montserrat Caballe, Angela Gheorgiu, Renee Fleming, Kiri Te Kanawa, Anna Netrebko, and pop-opera singers Hayley Westenra, Katherine Jenkins & Charlotte Church, and to me, the one that’s closest to my ideal is Montserrat Caballe’s.

But I’m still curious if there are any other good rendition of those arias so anybody, if u know some good renditions of “O Mio Babbino Caro” and “O Zittre Nicht” please help me…

    Thanx in advance!
    Keep up the posts!
